principal investigator

Dr. Garey earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.  He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York and a Master of Science in Biometry from the University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston. He completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, New York. He also completed an Infectious Disease Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Garey is an active member of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists and the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP).  His research interests include antimicrobial stewardship activities to prevent and treat Clostridium difficile infection, surgical site infections, and systemic candidiasis.

chris lancaster, m.s.

lab manager

Chris has been a part of The Garey Lab since 2017. Primarily focused on technical work including culturing, diagnostic testing, and sample analysis. Chris’ interests include cooking, traveling, and new experiences. Chris graduated with a Masters in Cellular Biology from University of Houston and a Bachelors in Biology and Chemistry obtained at Northern Arizona University.

jahangir alam, ph.d.

assistant professor

Jahangir has been a part of The Garey Lab since 2011. His research interest includes many different projects that involve environmental, animal, and clinical sources of Clostridium difficile, C. perfringens, VRE, CRE, and MRSA across the state of Texas. He is a broadly trained microbiologist (URL: http://publicationslist.org/alammj). Jahangir graduated with a Ph.D. from the Okayama University, Japan. He is currently Assistant Professor at University Of Houston College Of Pharmacy.

khurshida begum, ph.d.

Khurshida has been a part of The Garey Lab since 2016. Her research involves in many different projects that include molecular microbiology (PCR Ribotyping, MLVA, molecular cloning, gene knock out etc.), bacterial defense mechanism (CRISPR Cas system in bacteria), whole genome sequencing, meta-genomics, molecular surveillance of emerging and re-emerging pathogens: CD (Clostridium difficile), CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae), VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci), MDRO (Multi Drug Resistant Organisms). Her research interests include Infectious diseases, Molecular biology, Drug research, Genome editing, Gene therapy, CRISPR Cas system. Khurshida earned her PhD in Biopharmaceutical Sciences from Okayama University, Okayama, Japan.
