About Us
The Garey lab was created by Kevin Garey, University of Houston College of Pharmacy in 2001. The lab focuses on clinical and translational research related to infectious diseases in hospitalized patients, with specific emphases on Clostridioides difficile infection, the human microbiome, and antibiotic resistance. Since inception, the group has grown to include three other faculty members and research scientists bringing a range of expertise: M. Jahangir Alam, PhD (2011), Khurshida Begum, PhD (2016), Anne Gonzales-Luna, PharmD, BCIDP (2019), Eugénie Bassères, PhD (2021), and Jinhee Jo, PharmD, BCIDP (2022). The lab offers training opportunities in a variety of disciplines, and has trained dozens of postdoctoral fellows, masters students, and PhD candidates.
The Garey Lab is located in the University of Houston College of Pharmacy with the largest medical center in the world, the Texas Medical Center (TMC), nearby. This proximity has allowed for numerous collaborations with internationally recognized infectious diseases and epidemiology experts, including one of the largest sample biobanks in the world. Such efforts have resulted in hundreds of publications, and recognition of the Garey Lab as an instrumental group informing better patient care.
